The Sidekick!

I look up to him.  He’s like a god to me. A hero in the old sense of the word. Noble, fearless and just.  The kind of a hero that you’re proud to be assigned to, proud to serve.  And when he and I were paired, wow, that was the best day of my life, that and the first time I killed a villain.  You never forget your first kill.  And there he was, Electro, my hero and friend. The father I never had.

I remember a few years back when I was in an all out dog fight with one of The White Crow’s caped henchmen, he banked left into a black storm cloud, I knew better than to follow a Crow into darkness, but I was feeling cocky, afterall, I was Electro’s sidekick and that meant everyone in Laser City was watching on their scan-sets, all eyes were on the new side- kick, all eyes were on me.

So I thunder-clapped  my palms together and ZAP!  I sent a power-burst into the cloud just ahead of me to make sure I wasn’t being ambushed.  Then I dipped into the storm in an all out spiral and used my energy-core, the bio-nuclear generator between my solarlexes and heart, to accelerate my speed and add centrifugal force to my power bursts. Problem is, when I’m spinning like that I can’t really see where I’m going and BAM!  I’m blindsided by another Crow.  He hit me hard and solid to the chest, shut down my core, and I lost power .So, I’m falling at about a mile a minute and two Crows are diving down at me, clouds are slipping past me and I can hear the wind in my ears. I look up and I see their capes and beaked helmets, and they’re firing their scepters at me, one beam came so close to my face it singed my nosehairs.  And I’m thinking, this is it.  I’m gonna die without ever being made a hero.  I’m gonna die a side-kick.

Then, from below, he streaks right up past me, Electro, from nowhere,  palm-pulses blazing.  Took one Crow’s head right off and the other one tried to take Electro, one on one—airborne!  A henchman and a hero?  Electro toyed with him a little, then, using one extended arm, he let fly a single pulse that blew the Crow into pieces.

He flew down to where I had managed to re-boot my core and smiled at me.  ?He nodded and I knew–we were a team.  The pairing had been successful and the link had been consummated.  He knew, somehow he knew where I was and saved me.  That’s the thing about ‘true pairings’, a Hero can sense when his true sidekick is in trouble.

So over the next five years he trained me, at his side, against all kinds of villains. Supers and streets.  We became the Superhero Team of the Year last year. We were honored at the Golden Mask Awards and his hero, when he was a mere sidekick, Blast, made the mistake of saying, in front of all of Laser City, that me, Spark, was the one to look out for.  The next great hero.  I was on top of the world…until Electro looked t me and his expression changed from love to hate.  And in the flutter of a cape, it was over.

He stopped inviting me to all of the Hero parties. I was asked, by his Agent, to renegotiate my contract giving him an out-clause, just in case the relationship didn’t work out.And then I noticed something about Electro, about my hero.  I noticed that at the press conferences he stopped mentioning my name.  I noticed that my hero, was not heroic at all

Tonight he’s flying blind in a snow storm, up against a real brute named Polar Bear and his Cubs. Blood thirsty mutants. Killers of children and women.  He’s on a mission and I’m supposed to be backing him up. I’m his side-kick. The plan is that he comes at them from the south and me from the north.  An ambush.  Except I got my own plans.

I’m not gonna make this trip. Nope, and I blocked his telepathic connection to me. I can do that now, now that I no longer love my hero.  Now that he no longer loves me.

They’ll take him after a bloody fight. They’ll lose many but he’s outnumbered.  And he’ll be looking for me to come from the south.  He’ll be looking for me when they rip him to shreds.

Then I’ll get my own sidekick.  And I’ll be the hero. They’ll call me, Fusion.
