Bunnies Used to Be Bears

Look at the size of these guys! If bunnies were still this big, it’d be a lot harder to accidentally run over them with the lawn mower.

Newly discovered bones on the Spanish island Minorca have exposed this long-lost rabbit ancestor. Three to five million years ago, the Nuralagus rex enjoyed a lax life far away from any predators. These jokers hung out on the beach all day, growing fat and inactive. Eventually, the food chain caught up with them, and the species evolved into the quick, nimble critters we know today.
